Buying online safely
How do I know if a website is safe to shop online at? I have always been scared of putting down all my credit card information and then getting my money stolen or my account blocked or something that you normally hear from other people's experiences or read on Facebook.

Hello Tyler,
In our digital era, ecommerce and online businesses have revolutionized the way of shopping and changed it forever. However, these brought new ways of crime that can make you think twice before shopping online. To make sure you make safe transactions when buying online, there are some aspects to make sure about the business and its website.
Here we propose you a short checklist to do before shopping online:
-
Make sure they have a “contact section”, where you can see the details of the company such as phone number, email address, physical location, and other additional information about the business.
-
Check if they have one or more authentic SSL certificates. These should be available in the payment section and/or in the about section.
-
Reading reviews and customer feedback is also important because it shows that other people have made business with the company and, hopefully, they had a successful experience. Most ecommerce will have a reviews section but you can also find feedback in Trustpilot.
-
In most cases, your browser should legitimize the website you are visiting. Sometimes it will show a green bar in the URL, or a padlock next to it. You can also check the safety of the link here.
-
Before paying, make sure if it has the verification - showing the logos - of the payment companies such as Discover, VISA and Mastercard.
Lastly, we recommend to make sure that the website provokes you a safe feeling. Things like misspellings, an odd layout or the absence of colors and images can be a sign that the website is not professional or serious. Always follow your instinct and if it doesn’t show to be reliable, do your research and avoid putting down your information until you feel safe.
