Hello Monique,
Credit score is one of the most important numbers in your financial life. By keeping it high and estable, you can guarantee your approval for most financial products while getting the best conditions of the market. However, many situations can happen and sometimes your credit fluctuates, making your credit score drop without you being aware of it. But it is necessary to recognize the reasons and try to fix it if it was a mistake.
Some of the main reasons are:
-
You are using your credit more than before
-
You closed a credit account
-
You just finished paying off a loan
-
You missed a payment on your credit card or loan (late payments)
-
You applied for one or more loans/credit cards (hard inquiries)
-
You fell into Bankruptcy, foreclosure or a civil judgement
It is important to make sure you didn’t fall in any of the situations above, in order to ensure that the drop in your credit is not a consequence of one of your actions. On the other hand, if you didn’t recognize doing anything to have your credit decreasing, you should look specifically at what has changed in your report. Try to contact the bureaus or any financial advisor to analyze it carefully with an specialist and get more information about the change and future steps.
If there are no reasons possible of why your credit dropped, you could be a victim of identity theft or credit fraud. So, what you have identified that the drop has nothing to do with your financial actions, we recommend touching base with the credit bureau that issued your credit report and go through a dispute process with them. Disputes usually take some days or a few months, depending on how the bureau organizes the process. Stay on top of the dispute until you get a response or resolution to the problem.
Once you get a solution, we recommend analyzing the possibility of taking action to protect your account and prevent these types of situations. Freezing your credit is a good option to take into consideration, but there are many other options in the market to take care of credit. We highly recommend that, if you had your credit dropping for no recognizable reason, to talk to a financial advisor to look into your specific situation and get a better understanding from it.
