Is P2P lending safe?
I want to invest my money and I read about person-to-person lending. It sounds sketchy to me but I don't want to judge before trying it. My only problem is that if it is not safe, I will end up losing my money. Is it safe??

Hello Raoul,
Investing money will always be risky somehow. Regardless if it is in stocks, real estate, a business or any other new and innovative ways of investing - such as bitcoins or P2P lending -, you should be aware that investing will never be 100% risk-free. However, there are ways to maximize the possibilities to succeed and make your money grow. The best way to start is by familiarizing yourself with the type of investment you have decided to make. When it comes to P2P lending, it is important to make sure you understand the dynamic and the money flow plus the risks and benefits of investing in it.
What is P2P lending? Person-to-person lending is a way of lending your money to borrowers that are looking for a loan - usually a personal loan for no longer than 10 years. So, as an investor, you would play the role of a bank or a financial entity, which gives money and gets payments back with the amount of money plus interests.
This way of lending is offered by platforms - most of them are online - that also come with other features that help investors to guarantee the growth of their money. These features include buyback guarantees to protect the money you give in case the person is not able to pay you back, automation of your investments to have your money flowing between borrowers all the time, etc.
But, as all way of investing, P2P comes with some risks that you should be aware of:
-
Loans in these platforms are unsecured, which means that the borrower does not have any collateral as a guarantee of repayment. There are some platforms that have tools to protect your money and avoid you from losing.
-
Some platforms can easily go bankrupt if they are not doing well in the market.
-
Some platforms can just be a scam.
To make sure you avoid risk, we recommend reading about the platform you are trying to invest with. Always check reviews of other investors and even borrowers plus evaluate the website’s trustworthiness.
